ABSENT FARMER

i was walking i had 3 names
a fellow be-watcher parked his autocrust
great sand marks appeared along the curb
and i was standing beneath a billboard and a coke machine
this would be our finest hour

all long the highway the empty mines trashing up like memory
with tall signs out in the thicket and wayward

once from a root it seemed the possible
a quick wind a simple barter
and we were the machines homesick bugle boy
and it passed the foxes by
this took 3 hours
by which time we had dislodged the entire end
once on back with use
this being a slow glade
he proceeded to need to explain that
we were in the shiny part

now he had many plans but he told lies
this was a controversy
a lesson in social rummy
i was ready to walk on through
but the head was on fire
you are the one you walk in with the wolves
and soon you’re transvesting the pace
there’s a blockade in this man’s language
the trees bend and he’s denying the entrance
he throws a tray of ice down on the sand pit
like dick tracy i forgot my lipstick
but i held my mitten next to me

go on to the station then
and you will find a train
take the road by the lake
there you can assemble your fate

i had a motor then
i went down to the water with it
big black-backed gulls swept up the heat
it was almost night

Sonic Youth is one of those bands where you easily run out of superlatives to describe what they created. This could've easily come off as a cynical cash-grab by a band that had broken up 11 years prior to the release of this record, but that's not what this is.
